Got Nothinââ¬â¢ but Love for Ya Dr. Patelââ¬â¢s secretary turns off the radio as soon as she sees me walk into the waiting room, which makes me laugh because she tries to do it casually, as if I wonââ¬â¢t notice. She looks scared, turning the knob so gingerly ââ¬â the way people do things after they have seen one of my episodes, as if I am no longer human, but some wild hulking animal. We will write a custom essay sample on The Silver Linings Playbook Chapter 5 or any similar topic only for you Order Now After a brief wait, I meet with Cliff for my second session, like I will every Friday for the foreseeable future. I pick brown this time, and we sit in his leather recliners among the clouds, talking about how much we like women and ââ¬Å"kicking it like we do,â⬠which is another one of Dannyââ¬â¢s sayings. Cliff asks me if I like my new meds, and I tell him I do, even though I really have not noticed any effects at all and have only taken about half the pills my mother gave me last week ââ¬â hiding a few under my tongue and spitting them into the toilet when she leaves me alone. He asks me if I have experienced any unwanted side effects ââ¬â shortness of breath, loss of appetite, drowsiness, suicidal feelings, homicidal feelings, loss of virility, anxiety, itchiness, diarrhea ââ¬â and I tell him I havenââ¬â¢t. ââ¬Å"What about hallucinations?â⬠he says, and then leans forward a little, squinting. ââ¬Å"Hallucinations?â⬠I ask. ââ¬Å"Hallucinations.â⬠I shrug, say I donââ¬â¢t think I have hallucinated, and he tells me I would know if I had. ââ¬Å"Tell your mother if you see anything bizarre or horrifying,â⬠he says, ââ¬Å"but donââ¬â¢t worry, because you probably will not hallucinate. Only a very small percentage of people hallucinate while taking this combination of meds.â⬠I nod and promise I will report any hallucinations to my mother, but I do not really believe I will hallucinate no matter what type of drugs he gives me, especially since I know he will not be giving me LSD or anything like that. I figure weaker people probably complain about their drugs, but I am not weak and can control my mind pretty well. I am in the basement doing shots of water, taking my three-minute break between crunches on the Stomach Master 6000 and leg lifts on the weight bench, when I smell the unmistakable buttery flavor of my motherââ¬â¢s crabby snacks and I start to salivate unmercifully. Because I love crabby snacks, I leave the basement, enter the kitchen, and see that my mother is not only baking crabby snacks, which are buttered crabmeat and orange cheese on English muffins, but she is also making her homemade three-meats pizza ââ¬â hamburger, sausage, and chicken ââ¬â and those buffalo wings she gets from Big Foods. ââ¬Å"Why are you cooking crabby snacks?â⬠I ask hopefully, because I know from past experience that she only cooks crabby snacks when we are having company. Nikki loves crabby snacks and will eat a whole plate if you set it in front of her, and then she will complain later on the ride home, saying she is feeling fat because she has eaten too much. Back when I was emotionally abusive, I used to tell her that I did not want to hear her complaints every time she ate too much. But the next time Nikki eats too many crabby snacks, I am going to tell her she did not eat too much and that she looks too skinny anyway; Iââ¬â¢ll say she needs to gain a few pounds because I like my women looking like women and not like ââ¬Å"Ms. Six Oââ¬â¢Clock ââ¬â straight up, straight down,â⬠which is another term I learned from Danny. And I do hope my motherââ¬â¢s making crabby snacks signifies that apart time is over because Nikki is on her way to my parentsââ¬â¢ house, which seems like the best coming-home surprise my mother could cook up ââ¬â and as Mom is always trying to do nice things for me and my brother, I mentally prepare myself to be reunited with Nikki. My heart pounds at least fifty times during the few seconds it takes for my mother to answer my question. ââ¬Å"The Eagles are playing the Steelers tonight in a preseason exhibition game,â⬠my mother says, which is weird because Mom has always hated sports and barely knows that football season is in the fall, let alone what teams are playing on a given day. ââ¬Å"Your brother is coming over to watch the game with you and your father.â⬠My heart starts beating even faster because I have not seen my brother since shortly after apart time began, and like my father, he said some really awful things about Nikki the last time we talked. ââ¬Å"Jake is looking forward to seeing you, and you know how much your father loves the Eagles. I canââ¬â¢t wait to have all three of my men gathered around the couch again, just like old times.â⬠My mother smiles at me so hard I think she is going to break out in tears again, so I turn around and go back into the basement to do knuckle push-ups until my pecs burn and I can no longer feel my knuckles. Knowing that I will probably not be allowed to go for my run later, because we are having a family night, I put on a trash bag and run early, passing my high school friendsââ¬â¢ homes; passing St. Josephââ¬â¢s, which is the Catholic church I used to attend; passing Collingswood High School (class of 89 rules!) and the house my grandparents used to own by the park before they died. My old best friend sees me when I run past his new house on Virginia Avenue. Ronnie is just getting home from work, walking from his car to his front door, when I pass him on the sidewalk. He looks me in the eyes, and after I have passed, he yells, ââ¬Å"Pat Peoples? Is that you? Pat! Hey!â⬠I run even harder, because my brother, Jake, is coming to talk to me; Jake does not believe in happy endings, and I do not have the emotional wherewithal to deal with Ronnie right now, because he never once came to visit Nikki and me in Baltimore, although he promised so many times. Nikki used to call Ronnie ââ¬Å"whipped,â⬠saying that his wife, Veronica, ââ¬Å"keeps Ronnieââ¬â¢s social calendar where she keeps his balls ââ¬â in her purse.â⬠Nikki told me that Ronnie would never visit me in Baltimore, and she was right. He never visited me in the bad place either, but he used to write me letters about how great his daughter, Emily, was and I guess is, although I have not yet met Emily to verify the letters. When I return home, Jakeââ¬â¢s car is there ââ¬â a fancy silver BMW, which sort of implies that my brother is doing well now when it comes to ââ¬Å"pockets getting fatter,â⬠as Danny says. So I sneak in the back door and run up the steps to the shower. After I wash and put on clean clothes, I take a deep breath and follow the sound of conversation to the living room. Jake stands when he sees me. He has on fancy pants, lined with charcoal pinstripes, and a robinââ¬â¢s-egg blue polo shirt that is formfitting enough to show that he is still pretty fit. He is also wearing a watch with diamonds all over the face, which Danny would call Jakeââ¬â¢s bling-bling. My brotherââ¬â¢s hair has thinned a little too, but his head is gelled and looks swanky. ââ¬Å"Pat?â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"Didnââ¬â¢t I say you wouldnââ¬â¢t recognize him?â⬠Mom says. ââ¬Å"You look like Arnold Schwarzenegger.â⬠He feels my bicep, which I absolutely hate because I donââ¬â¢t like to be touched by anyone except Nikki. Since heââ¬â¢s my brother, I donââ¬â¢t say anything. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re frickinââ¬â¢ ripped,â⬠he adds. I look at the floor, because I remember what he said about Nikki ââ¬â I am still mad about that ââ¬â and yet I am also happy to see my brother after not seeing him for what feels like forever. ââ¬Å"Listen, Pat. I should have come to see you more in Baltimore, but those places freak me out and I â⬠¦ I â⬠¦ I just couldnââ¬â¢t see you like that, okay? Are you mad at me?â⬠I am sort of still mad at Jake, but suddenly I remember another one of Dannyââ¬â¢s lines that is too appropriate to leave unsaid, so I say, ââ¬Å"Got nothinââ¬â¢ but love for ya.â⬠Jake looks at me for a second as if I had punched him in the gut. He blinks a few times almost as if he is going to cry, and then he hugs me with both arms. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry,â⬠he says, and holds me for longer than I like, which isnââ¬â¢t very long ââ¬â unless itââ¬â¢s Nikki hugging me. When he lets go, Jake says, ââ¬Å"I got a present for you.â⬠He pulls an Eagles jersey out of a plastic bag and tosses it to me. I hold it up and see itââ¬â¢s number 84, which I recognize as a wide receiverââ¬â¢s number, but I do not know the name. Isnââ¬â¢t that young receiver Freddie Mitchell number 84? I think but do not say, because I donââ¬â¢t want to insult my brother, who was nice enough to buy me a present. ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Baskett?â⬠I ask, which is the name on the jersey. ââ¬Å"Undrafted rookie sensation Hank Baskett? Heââ¬â¢s the preseason story. These jerseys are hot on the streets of Philadelphia. And now you have one to wear to the games this year.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wear to the games?â⬠ââ¬Å"Now that youââ¬â¢re home, youââ¬â¢re gonna want your old seat back, right?â⬠ââ¬Å"At the Vet?â⬠ââ¬Å"The Vet?â⬠Jake laughs and looks at my mother. My mother looks scared. ââ¬Å"No ââ¬â at Lincoln Financial Field.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s Lincoln Financial Field?â⬠ââ¬Å"Didnââ¬â¢t they let you watch TV in that place? Itââ¬â¢s the home of the Eagles, the stadium your teamââ¬â¢s played three seasons in now.â⬠I know Jake is lying to me, but I donââ¬â¢t say anything. ââ¬Å"Anyway, you got a seat right next to mine and Scottââ¬â¢s. Season tickets, bro. Are you psyched, or what?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t have any money for season tickets,â⬠I say, because I let Nikki have the house and the cars and the bank accounts when apart time began. ââ¬Å"I got your back.â⬠Jake punches me in the arm. ââ¬Å"I might not have been a good brother for the past few years, but Iââ¬â¢m gonna make up for all that now that youââ¬â¢re home.â⬠I thank my brother, and then Mom starts crying again. She cries so hard that she has to leave the room, which is weird, since Jake and I are making up and season tickets to the Eagles are quite a nice present ââ¬â not to mention the jersey. ââ¬Å"Put on your Baskett jersey, bro.â⬠I put it on, and it feels good to be wearing Eagles green, especially a jersey that Jake picked out special for me. ââ¬Å"You wait and see how good your boy Baskett is going to be this year,â⬠Jake says in a strange way, as if my future were somehow linked to the Eaglesââ¬â¢ rookie wide receiver ââ¬â Hank Baskett. Life In Mexico Essays - Identity, Fanny Hill, Adolescence
Life In Mexico In her many letters, and through her journals, Fanny Calderon de la Barca has left us a very informative eyewitness account of nineteenth century Mexico. Although these writings can be very useful in studying this period of time, it is important to note some of the factors that may have affected what she wrote. Fanny Calderon de la Barca's own social identity was one of the factors that had the most profound impact on her writings and observations. It is because of this social identity that her writings can be used advantageously as a source for social history...However, it is the same social identity that will help alter and be disadvantageous to using her work as a source for social history. Through examples of her writing this paper will argue these merits and show how this work can and can not be used as a source for social history. It is important to understand Fanny de la Barca's social identity, in order to help clarify the pros and con's of her work. She was the fifth child of ten born. Her father was well to do landowner, as well as a legal writer in Scotland. Her mother was related to the Earl of Buchan, in addition to other noble Scottish families (pg.5). She was very well educated as a child. She did see and face some adversity growing up. This adversity and experiences help to shape her social identity, and her as a person. Her family went bankrupt, they were forced to move, soon after her father passed away. Her family moved to Boston where the remaining family members, her included, started a school. The school was temporarily successful and then closed due to a mishap. The family then moved yet again to Staten Island. Her childhood was filled with ups and downs. Throughout it all she maintained a positive attitude and grew as a result. It is obvious that losing a loved, especially one as close as a parent will have a profound impact on a person. Seeing her family go bankrupt and having to move many times has showed Fanny that anything can happen at anytime, even if your are financially secure. Experiencing these ups and downs in her family life helped to open her eyes to the trials and tribulations of others. This is apparent in her writing. She was able to understand better and sympathize with the people she would come in contact with. The moving around probably made her later travelling life much easier to become accustomed to. She never really settled anyplace for an extended period of time. Although Fanny was an outside observer, she was able to work objectively on the many things she saw and people she met. However, because of the time period she some times couldn't write exactly what she wanted to, especially when it came to certain government issues. Due to her husband's respected position in society she was able to meet many important people, generals and leaders. They were received and treated with respect just about everywhere. Sometimes even with a twenty-one gun salute, like the one from the Jason. She was able to make observations of what she saw as they traveled from place to place. This treatment had its own impact on her writing. Although she noted some of the negative things that she saw, such as the smoke blackened buildings on the way to Vera Cruz, etc., she and her husband almost always stayed in a nice and comfortable place or house. This kept her from witnessing and experiencing some of the problems firsthand. Also a lot of the information she gathered was from generals and governors, people such as Santa Anna. These were not true firsthand accounts from peasants and other lower class families. For this reason her information may have been biased. She was really analyzing the opinions of higher ups, and may have received tainted information, or limited access, in certain situations. An example would have been Mexico's breaking from Spain, the revolution and how it happened. Her own childhood experiences may have helped her in using her own insight on certain topics. This helped her form opinions where she may have been sheltered from certain information. This also could have adversely biased her writings. It is important to consider that these are Fanny's observations and opinions, and are affected by her, and the experiences in her life. It is my opinion that although she had seen and faced some adversity in life, Fanny basically led

Definition and Examples of Text Messaging
Definition and Examples of Text Messaging Texting is the process of sending and receiving brief written messages using a cellular (mobile) phone. Also called text messaging, mobile messaging, short mail, point-to-point short-message service, and Short Message Service (SMS). ââ¬Å"Texting isnââ¬â¢t written language,â⬠says linguist John McWhorter. It much more closely resembles the kind of language weââ¬â¢ve had for so many more years: spoken language (quoted by Michael C. Copeland in Wired, March 1, 2013).According to Heather Kelly of CNN, Six billion text messages are sent every day in the United States, ... and over 2.2 trillion are sent a year. Globally, 8.6 trillion text messages are sent each year, according to Portio Research. Example: When Birdy texted again, I was only a mile from Glades City, and the junkyard owned by Harris Spooner, so I was feeling tense and alone on this dark country road, until I read her message:On way home, no luck. Will call when reception better. Sorry!!! Ã¢Ë ºI felt like saying Yippee! a word Ive never used, and my spirits, which had been low, rebounded. ... So I left a message, then replied to her text: Am near Glade City exit, how about glass of wine? Where U? As I hit Send, I noticed car lights behind me and was relieved when I saw that it was an eighteen-wheeler.(Randy Wayne White, Deceived. Penguin, 2013) Myths About Texting All the popular beliefs about texting are wrong, or at least debatable. Its graphic distinctiveness is not a totally new phenomenon. Nor is its use restricted to the young generation. There is increasing evidence that it helps rather than hinders literacy. And only a very tiny part of the language uses its distinctive orthography. à (David Crystal, Txtng: the Gr8 Db8. Oxford University Press, 2008) Texting and Instant Messaging [A]bbreviations, acronyms, and emoticons are less prevalent in American college student IM [Instant Messaging] conversations than suggested by the popular press. To move beyond media hyperbole regarding text messaging, we need corpus-based analyses of texting.Judging from our sample, American college-student text messaging and IM differed in several interesting ways. Text messages were consistently longer and contained more sentences, probably resulting from both cost factors and the tendency for IM conversations to be chunked into sequences of short messages. Text messages contained many more abbreviations than IMs, but even the number in texting was small. à (Naomi Baron, Always On: Language in an Online and Mobile World. Oxford University Press, 2008) A Good Text A good text, a well-timed text, a text that expresses some bullet of revelation, some reminder of love, some thoughtful association or ball-busting paraphrase of what we agree on reconnects us when that is all we ever wantedconnectionin the midst of the chattering, indifferent cloud of humanity.(Tom Chiarella, Rule No. 991: It Is Entirely Possible to Write a Good Text Message. Esquire, May 2015)à Teenagers and Texting In the United States, 75% of teenagers text, sending an average of 60 texts a day. According to Pew Internet research, texting is teens most common form of communication, beating out phone conversations, social networks, and old-fashioned face-to-face conversations. à (Heather Kelly, OMG, the Text Message Turns 20. But Has SMS Peaked? CNN, December 3, 2012) For teenagers now, . . . texting has been largely superseded by instant messagingas Stephanie Lipman, a 17-year-old Londoner, explains. I did text for a while, but instant messaging is so much better like a constant stream-of-consciousness. You dont have to bother with Hello. How are you? or any of that. You just have this series of conversations with your friends which you can add on to when youre in the mood. à (James Delingpole, Texting Is So Last Year. Daily Telegraph, Jan. 17, 2010) [F]or young people, blogs are work, not play. A 2008 Pew research project found that while 85% of 12 to 17-year-olds engaged in electronic personal communication (including texting, email, instant messaging and commenting on social media), 60% didnââ¬â¢t consider these texts to be writing. Another study in 2013 revealed that teenagers still distinguish between the proper writing they do for school (which may be on blogs) and their informal, social communication.(Mel Campbell, Should We Mourn the End of Blogs? The Guardian, July 17, 2014) Textspeak in the 19th Century This S A, until U I CI pray U 2 X QsAnd do not burn in F E GMy young and wayward muse. Now fare U well, dear K T J,I trust that U R trueWhen this U C, then you can say,A S A I O U.(Final verses of Essay to Miss Catharine Jay in Gleanings From the Harvest-Fields of Literature, Science and Art: A Melange of Excerpta, Curious, Humorous, and Instructive, 2nd ed., collated by Charles Carroll Bombaugh. Baltimore: T. Newton Kurtz, 1860) Predictive Texting Predictive texting is aà program in many cellular (mobile) phones that predicts a completeà wordà after a user has typed in just one or twoà letters. [Predictive texting] significantly reduces the number of key-presses, but there are costs alongside benefits. An early study (2002) reported that only just over half the participants who hadà predictive messagingà actually used it. The others did not use it for a variety of reasons. Some said it slowed them down. Some missed the option to useà abbreviationsà (though one can code them in). Some said their system did not offer the right words and found the task of adding new words slow and annoying. (David Crystal,à Txtng: the Gr8 Db8. Oxford University Press, 2008)[W]hile Predictive textingà might be good for the nationsà spelling, it is not always easily understood. Try typing he if is cycle, hell in to get his awake and come go to red of and see what happens when the right combination of buttons throws up the wrong words. . . . Researchers might find an intriguing answer for why a kiss often turns out to be on the lips. Are chefs aged? Is it boring to be coping? Is art apt? Is it always good to be home in the hood? Or has everyone gone? And if you try and do something asap why does it often turn out crap?à (I. Hollinghead, Whatever Happened to txt lngwj:)?à The Guardian, Jan. 7, 2006) -à Concern about the widespread infiltration of text messaging conventions intoà written Englishà may ... be misplaced, as predictive texting becomes more common and sophisticated. ... While it seems certain that our accepted notions of standards inà languageà will be influenced by electronic forms ofà communication, it is very hard to predict in any detail and with any certainty what this impact might be. How effective was development of the Europe economic in 1500 CE Research Paper
How effective was development of the Europe economic in 1500 CE - Research Paper Example The idea of states with a standing army and bureaucratic process began to take root, and this changed the worldââ¬â¢s perspective of Europe. This paper will elaborate on the development of Europe economy in 1500 AD and illustrate how this period saw the advancement of technology by great inventions such as gunpowder, relatively advanced ships, improved navigation techniques, and the printing press would be the premise of change in Europe. Changes in Social Structure The chaos of the late middle Ages did not equally affect the inhabitants of Europe. Advancement in military technology and better pikemen in the battlefield challenged the dominance of the knights in battle; the title of being a noble began to reduce in value and stature. The Economic challenges of the Middle Ages saw an increased in labor shortages and this translated to higher prices of commodities (Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson 57). The wealth belonging to the people In nobility was cut into by the high inflation o f that time, and this was due to the static value of land which was the base of their wealth. A large number of peasants in Europe had attained the capacity to purchase their freedom from their lords; they began to pay a fixed amount of rent instead of paying them with labor. Due to the high inflation, the rent paid by the tenants was insufficient to satisfy their needs and therefore the value of nobility declined. Not all nobles were affected by inflation; some nobles sought employment from the king and were taken on to join the army or work as courtiers. A good number of people lost their nobility status from having involving themselves with agriculture and commerce like the middle class. Despite the loss in value, nobles were still held in high standing in society; for that reason, the now wealthy middle class began buying nobility titles from the king, surrendering their business oriented lives, settling in landed in landed estates. The provision of buying nobility titles enable d the noble class to be replenished despite its rapidly dwindling numbers. Western Europe did not have any peasants by 1500, most of the former peasants owned their own land by that time. In addition to that, the middle class was getting higher due to their increasing wealth and the positions held in the Kingdom. Recovery of the Economy Europeââ¬â¢s economic rebirth happened on the foundation of agriculture. The aftermath of the conflicts in the middle ages weakened the nobles and the church that had great influence on economic activities. The reduced influence of the church and nobles led to the emergence of well-structured monarchies in Western Europe that safeguarded peace encouraging the growth of commerce and trade. Peasant s that had not lost their lives in the Black Death inherited land belonging to the deceased and were able to improve their standards of living. Agricultural production standards rapidly rose due to the fact the former peasants worked on their own land and this motivated them to work harder than they did before. The improved standards of living and food security fueled an increase in population; it is estimated that the population rose to 70 million from 50 million fifty years earlier (Janssen 89). The economic recovery had a great trickle-down effect that cumulated to the creation of capitalist economic system. The effects were: 1. The rapid population growth had the implication that
